Hazelnut Shell

Hazelnut shell is a proven biomass source with a calorific value close to wood (3,950–4,420 kcal/kg) at a far lower cost, helping greenhouse-heating and industrial-boiler operators cut their fuel bills. Its 1–3% ash content reduces boiler-cleaning frequency; low moisture makes storage and transport easy. It can be used directly in standard solid-fuel boilers, biomass power plants and granule production lines. Sourced from the Giresun and Ordu region, it is available from stock by the truckload (~21 tonnes) or, on request, in smaller lots, for domestic delivery and export.

Sales Unit Tonne
Minimum Order 1 truckload (~21 tonnes)
Packaging Options Bulk · Big bag · Sack
  • Calorific Value Close to Wood 3,950–4,420 kcal/kg lower heating value — an economical, sustainable fuel compared with coal and wood.
  • Low Ash and Moisture 1–3% ash and 5–9% moisture; boiler cleaning becomes less frequent and storage and transport easier.
  • Reliable Supply by the Truckload From Giresun–Ordu stock by the truckload (~21 tonnes) or in flexible lots, domestic and export.

Areas of Use

  • Greenhouse and kiln heating Stable combustion and low ash deliver uninterrupted, balanced heat in greenhouses and industrial kilns.
  • Industrial boiler fuel In solid-fuel and biomass boilers, its near-wood energy markedly lowers heating costs.
  • Biomass power plants A high volatile-matter content ensures easy ignition and efficient, continuous combustion.
  • Sandblasting / surface-cleaning granule Ground, it is an eco-friendly, non-scratching natural abrasive alternative to silica sand.
  • Animal bedding Its moisture-absorbing structure keeps barns and coops dry, clean and less odorous.

Technical Reference Values

The higher heating value (HHV — gross energy) of hazelnut shell is close to wood and competitive with coal; the lower heating value (LHV) reflects the net energy obtained in practice during combustion. Low ash and moisture let this energy be released efficiently and with little waste.

Higher heating value (HHV) 4,420 – 4,590 kcal/kg (18.5 – 19.2 MJ/kg)
Lower heating value (LHV) 3,950 – 4,420 kcal/kg (16.5 – 18.5 MJ/kg)
Moisture content 5–9%
Ash content 1–3%
Volatile matter ~72%

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hazelnut shell burn in stoves and boilers?

Yes. With a higher heating value (HHV) of 4,420–4,590 kcal/kg — close to wood and competitive with coal — hazelnut shell can be burned directly in solid-fuel stoves, central-heating boilers, greenhouse-heating systems and industrial biomass boilers. Thanks to its low ash content it leaves less slag and boiler cleaning becomes less frequent.

Is hazelnut shell more economical than coal?

In most applications, yes. Its cost per kilogram is well below that of imported coal; although its calorific value is somewhat lower than coal, the fuel cost per kcal usually remains lower. For an accurate comparison we recommend evaluating fuels on a price/kcal basis — we share current shipment information at the quotation stage.

How much ash does it leave; will it foul the boiler?

The reference ash content is 1–3%, which is low compared with coal and many biomass fuels. Low ash reduces how often the boiler and flue need cleaning and limits slag formation.

How is hazelnut shell stored; is it affected by moisture?

With 5–9% moisture, hazelnut shell is a dry product. Storing it in a covered, rain-protected and ventilated area preserves its efficiency; because calorific value falls as moisture rises, dry storage is important.

Where is it used besides as fuel?

Ground, it is also used as a sandblasting/surface-cleaning granule (an eco-friendly alternative to silica sand), as a raw material for activated carbon, and as animal bedding. For sandblasting, the mesh size is prepared on request.

How do minimum order and delivery work?

We usually supply hazelnut shell by the truckload (~21 tonnes), and in smaller lots on request. We ship from Giresun–Ordu stock to all provinces of Türkiye and for export. For a sample and a quote you can reach us via WhatsApp or the contact form.
