Big Bag, Bulk and Sack: A Packaging and Shipment Guide for Shell and Biomass Products

· Haroğlu International

In wholesale shell and biomass buying there is a topic often overlooked but directly affecting cost and operations: packaging and shipment. The right packaging choice determines loading/unloading speed, storage order, transport cost and even the preservation of product quality. In this guide we cover the three basic packaging types, when each is preferred, and what you need to know when planning a shipment.

Three Basic Packaging Types

Shell, pellet, granule and feed raw materials are mostly shipped in three forms:

PackagingTypical unitAdvantageBest suited to
BulkWhole truckLowest packaging cost, fast loadingHigh-volume, continuous consumption
Big bag (FIBC)~500 – 1,250 kgMoved by forklift, stock divisibleTidy storage, staged use
Sack~25 – 50 kgHandled by hand, suits retailSmall amount, trials, end user

Note: a big bag’s fill weight depends on the product’s bulk density. For light products such as shell, the bag fills by volume but the weight may stay below 1 tonne; for dense products such as granule, the weight approaches the upper limit.

Which Packaging, When?

Bulk shipment, having no packaging cost, is the most economical option per kilogram. But the buyer must have the space (covered warehouse, silo or concrete yard) and equipment (loader, conveyor) to unload the product. Greenhouse and industrial operations that burn continuously and in high volume usually prefer bulk.

Big bag is the balanced option between bulk and sack. Because it can be moved by forklift or crane, loading/unloading is fast; it is possible to use the stock bag by bag and store it cleanly and tidily. It is common for granule (such as sandblasting granule) and for regular needs that are not a full truckload.

Sack is suitable for small amounts, trial purchases and retail/end-user sales. It can be handled by hand; but it is the option with the highest packaging and labour cost per kilogram.

Which product you buy in which packaging also varies by product group: shell fuels and feed raw materials are mostly shipped in bulk, big bag or sack; food products in box, carton or sack.

How Much Fits in a Truck? Weight or Volume?

One of the questions wholesale buyers ask most is “how many tonnes fit in a truck?” The answer surprises many: for shell and light biomass, the limit is set not by weight but by volume.

A standard truck has both a weight limit (axle/legal load) and a volume limit (body dimensions). For light, bulky products such as hazelnut shell and peanut shell, when the body is full the weight has not yet reached the upper limit — that is, the truck “fills by volume.” Such products are typically loaded at around 21 tonnes per truck. For denser feed raw materials such as sugar beet pulp, it can go up to 25 tonnes.

So when evaluating transport cost, you need to factor in not only the “freight per tonne” but also how many tonnes fit in the truck. A higher-density product means more tonnage per truck and makes transport cheaper per tonne.

Preserving Quality in Moisture, Storage and Handling

Packaging serves not only transport but also a quality-preserving function:

  • Protection from moisture: the biggest enemy of shell and pellet is moisture. In bulk shipment, covered transport and closed/ventilated storage; in big bag, protecting the bag from rain preserves the calorific value. We detailed this in our Calorific Value, Moisture and Ash article.
  • Dust and disintegration: for fine granule and dusty product, big bag/sack provides less loss and a cleaner environment than bulk.
  • Stock rotation: packaged product, with a “first in, first out” order, prevents staleness/mould.

Points to Watch in Domestic and Export Shipment

In domestic delivery, the packaging decision is mostly made according to your unloading capability. In export, packaging should be considered together with the mode of transport (container/truck) and the delivery term (Incoterms): in container loading, big-bag stacking and weight distribution gain importance. We explained how the delivery terms (EXW, FOB, CIF) determine the sharing of cost and responsibility in our EXW, FOB and CIF in Export article.

Shipment Planning: Practical Tips

  1. State your unloading capacity up front. Is there a forklift, a covered area? This clarifies the bulk/big-bag decision.
  2. Plan before the season. In the winter months when demand rises, both price and delivery time increase; commit your stock early.
  3. Optimise truck fill. Where possible, a full-truckload shipment lowers transport per tonne.
  4. Choose packaging by your consumption rate. Slow consumption + clean storage → big bag; fast and high consumption → bulk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tonnes of shell or biomass fit in a truck? The amount a truck holds is limited more by volume than by weight. For low-density products such as shell and light biomass, a standard truck typically holds around 21 tonnes; for pulp and denser feed raw materials, up to 25 tonnes. The exact tonnage varies with the product’s bulk density and packaging.

How many kilograms is a big bag? A big bag (FIBC) is usually filled to between 500 and 1,250 kg depending on the product’s density; for light products such as shell, the weight may stay lower because the volume fills up. Because it can be moved by forklift or crane, it speeds up loading and unloading.

Which is more advantageous, bulk or big bag? For high-volume, continuous consumption by buyers who have their own unloading/storage set-up, bulk is the most economical option. For those who want to use the stock in portions, store it cleanly or move it by forklift, big bag is more practical. For small amounts and retail use, the sack is suitable.
